When I Was a Boy

3/4/2018

Do you ever have vague memories from your childhood?  So vague, that you are not certain if it’s an actual memory or something you just happened to think of as a child?  Maybe it really happened, but now years later, the details are sketchy at best.  Maybe it was just a thought, a dream and over the years my brain has colored in the details to make it seem so real…yet, I’m not sure…..

I’ll give you a couple of “for examples:”

When I was a boy, if there were a fire or an accident, the whole town was on the scene.  It was better than “T.V. reporting live” as I watched many a barns burn down.  But one memory sticks, the problem is that I’m not sure if it’s real or not.  Not far from the farm where I lived, there was an old wooden bridge.  One day as a black Model A was crossing it, the bridge just buckled.  There, at the bottom of the now “V-shaped” bridge was this car…squished together.

Here’s another vague memory.  It defies the law of gravity, but for some reason it seems so very real.  Every morning after getting dressed for school, I stood at the top of the steps and like Aladdin on his magic carpet, I floated down the steps.  When our kids were little, they would sit at the top of the steps, lean back, straighten their legs and down they’d go seemingly not even touching the steps…Armona said they were doing “pa-pets”…..that’s what we still call them today as our grandkids do the same thing!

Back to my memories….what I regret is not asking my parents if these things and others, really did happen.  Now I will never know.  I can only wonder….

But there is one thing I carried from childhood into adulthood with certainty.  Not fictional, not in my imagination, but my real faith in Jesus Christ.  One day, I’m planning on taking that ride to heaven.  Maybe not on a magic carpet, but maybe in a fiery chariot pulled by fiery horses!

Love to all of you,

Pastor Allan
