Reflections from the Heart of Allan Redenius
Short vignettes from years gone by:
  • Visualize this.  A 1949 Chevrolet.  Three high school boys cruising around town, at a moderate speed.  OK, maybe an excessive speed, but only by a little.  Vaughn is driving, I’m in the middle, and Buzzy is sitting by the passenger door.  It’s summer and Buzzy has the window rolled down with his arm resting on the door.  Suddenly, Vaughn makes a sharp left turn and the door, by which Buzzy is sitting, unexplainably opens and Buzzy swings out holding onto the door for all he’s worth.  A quick jerk to the right and the door closes with Buzzy back in the seat.  All is well as three boys laughed at near disaster.

  • On a blustery winter’s day, I’m in the car with Doug.  He’s the one with the cool 1963 Impala, fast Impala.  Minding our own business and suddenly, while turning left, the car minds its own business too.  It doesn’t turn, but only half turns.  We are almost stopped when, thud!  We hit a fire hydrant.  Both of us looked out the window expecting a geyser of water to be spraying up in front of the car.  No harm to the car, but as for the fire hydrant, that little bump probably didn’t prolong its life expectancy.  Two boys laughed at the near disaster.

  • One evening, I took the family car out to “shag-the-drag” with my friends.  Now I need to tell you, in my town, the drag was no more than six blocks long.  The next day, my dad asked of me, “Where did you go last night?”  My reply was, “Nowhere.”  To which he responded with, “If you went nowhere, how did you put 100 miles on the car?”  Honestly, I never left town.  One boy now laughing at the memory.

So, now an old man, I would give you this advice.  Don’t be “shaggin’-the-drag” or cruising around with no purpose.  How I wish I could have those hours back to use them for God’s Kingdom work here on earth.  Although, I do use my past life experiences to relate to you so that I might witness to the glory of God.  After all, in the above “near disasters” my guardian angels were kept very busy!

Old man laughing at boyhood experiences…..
