My Legacy

2/11/2018

I’ve often said, “….that the only things that really matter are those things that matter one hundred years from now.”  With my own home grown wisdom, I now ask of myself, “What have I done that will matter a hundred years from now?”

Could it be that notoriety within a profession is worthy of a long lasting legacy?  I know a man who was a hard worker and at one point he told me, “All I want on my tombstone is this, “He was a hard worker.”  What kind of epitaph is that?  About being an important person, a pastor once reminded me that the cemetery is full of important people who didn’t think their profession would survive without them.

Next I ask, is it wealth that is a worthy legacy to leave as an inheritance?    King Solomon was the richest man to have ever lived.  Today I wonder, “Where are all his treasures?”  They are gone like the morning foggy mist, vanished.

Should it be fame that I should seek after as a lasting legacy?  Like catching a hand full of smoke, fame is oh so fleeting, so temporary.  For instance, most kids today don’t know who Mickey Mantle or Roger Maris were, or their claim to fame.

What about my family and progeny, descendants who follow after me?  The focus of my legacy is coming into view when I think of family.  Because what I do today, what I profess as my core belief, ripples down the corridor of time.  So what I do today does matter a hundred years from now for them.  If I do not pass the love of Jesus down to them and they lose their souls to the enemy, then my legacy is stopped, maybe forgotten.

So in short, here’s my legacy for all who read this reflection of my heart.  “I have only one life to live and it will soon be passed.  Only what I’ve done for the Lord will last.”

Jesus is what matters a hundred years from now!

Blessings,

Pastor Allan
