Memories

Reflections From the Heart of Allan Redenius
 
I’ve been thinking of things that once were, but are no more.  Here are just a few:

• Riding in a one-horse open sleigh.  I can almost hear the sleigh bells as the horse trods ahead in an open field of snow;
• Neighbors sitting on the front porch to shout out greetings as someone walks by.  Now everyone retreats to the back deck with a privacy fence marking the property border;
• Going for a ride on a hot Sunday afternoon, just to feel the cool breeze of the open windows;
• Family gatherings for birthdays, cousins from all around would come;
• A time when people would actually take time to talk to each other, instead of text;
• Playing “King of the Mountain” on a new stack of cobs from the shelled corn;
• The smell of fresh cut hay as you drive through the countryside;
• And, of course grandmas and grandpas, moms and dads, and so many others who are loved and now are no more here on earth.

 
Any one of us could put together a list, melancholy memories from days gone by.  But if I’ve learned one thing over time, it’s this—nothing stays the same, things change.  That’s just the way of the world.
 
But though the world, even I, might change, there is one thing that never, ever changes.  JESUS!  “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!”  Though the storms of life might pass by, times might ebb and flow, there is one anchor that holds fast.  JESUS!
