How Is a Pearl Formed?

3/25/2018

How is a pearl formed?  A grain of sand or some other foreign object makes its way into the clam.  To protect itself from the intruder, the clam puts a coat of “mother of pearl” around the irritant.  The more the irritation, the more the “mother of pearl” is deposited, and thus, the bigger the pearl.

I recently heard this comparison.  The walls of heaven are 1,500 miles high and long.  We all know that the gates of heaven are made up of pearls.  All of us affectionately call them the “pearly gates of heaven.”  Now, as I think about the enormity of the wall around heaven, how absolutely huge must be those pearls that are the gates?

Let us compare the pearls of a necklace to the pearly gates of heaven.  So if a grain of sand irritates a clam to form a normal sized pearl as we know it, then how do the pearly gates get so big?

Think of it this way.  As a grain of sand is an irritant to earthly clams, so too sin is an irritant to the pearls that form the gates of heaven.  Could it be that all of mankind’s sins are encased in those humongous pearls which one day we will all walk through?

Now I heard this analogy and wondered to myself, “When could I ever use it?”  Within a week of hearing it, God placed me in front of a woman who was selling pearls.  Buy a clam and she would pry it open to discover the size of your pearl.

God must have placed this story and her in my life at the same time so I could use it as a tool to witness to her.  Do I walk away or do I share the story with her?  Of course….I shared the story!

What are the odds I would hear this story and within a week I meet someone selling clams with pearls in them?  You just can’t ignore God’s divine intervention in your life.  At least I can’t….are you?

As we celebrate Palm Sunday, let us remember the One Who came for each of us….Hosanna in the Highest!

Love in Him,
Pastor Allan
