Day Dreamin'

Often it is good to dream about possibilities.  My friend, Dr. Clarence Tompkins, who founded Friendship Haven, always said, “Dream no small dreams….”  Well, I’m tellin’ you, I’m good at dreamin’!

People often talk about, dream about, their dream retirement place.  Often, it’s on the beach in warmer weather.  Let me paint a picture of what a dream retirement place for me might look like.  Now remember….it is a dream…not realistic.

Instead of looking out over an ocean or lake every sunset, I visualize watching God paint the sky every evening from the vantage point of sitting in a serene valley that is surrounded by low, rising mountains all around.  Through my valley, flows a stream of sparkling diamonds.  Along that stream come herds of elk and beautiful horses to drink from this river of life.  As I leisurely stroll along, the animals of the field greet me by name.  Peace and calm chase away the storms of life.

On the front porch of my log cabin sit two mountain lions, easy to pet.  There they guard against foe, but know a friend.  I hear the laughter of little bunnies in the yard as they chase and play.  An owl in the tree “hoots” with approval.

Not too far away, is a small lake of shiny, crystal; clear as clear can be, to the bottom I can see.  Just for playing, rocks for skipping lay all about.  Here, I stand still to hear the whispering pines.  I watch them sway to and fro as often I say, “Look, God is walking on the tree tops.”

A stroll to the barn that smells of fresh cut hay.  There my chariot awaits for a ride around my little Kingdom.  Pulled by horses of imaginary fire from Elijah’s descendent.

Then I’m awakened and my dream must end.  Oh wait, maybe one day in heaven…….

Love you all,
Pastor Allan
