D-Day

Well, this past week we celebrated D-Day.  A whole lot of boys became men that day.  I salute them all!

Below are a couple of memorable “war stories” I’ve been told over the years.

  • An army private engaged in fierce combat in France told me that a red hot 8 mm artillery shell skidded across the ground and stopped right beside him.  He said, “God was watching out for me that day.  The shell did not explode.”
  • Serving under General Patton, another infantry man crawled out from under his tank after repair between battles and when he stood up, he was face to face with General Dwight D. Eisenhower.  He started to salute, but Eisenhower said, “Don’t salute me soldier.  If you do, the Germans will know I’m a high value target.”
  • That same infantry man serving under General Patton helped liberate a Nazi concentration camp.  For those who want to rewrite history and say the holocaust never happened, he showed me black and white pictures of people stacked like a pile of wood.  He said the Germans had just dug a mass grave for all of them.  But when the Americans got there, they made the Nazis dig individual graves with shovels.
  • A seaman aboard the USS Missouri witnessed the signing of Japan’s surrender to General MacArthur.  After the signing, they took the signing table back down to the mess hall.  A while later, someone said, “We need to save that table.  It has historical significance.”  My friend went down to retrieve it, but he wasn’t 100% sure they picked the right table.
  • We’ve all seen pictures of General MacArthur walking in the water as the Americans stormed ashore at the Philippians.  Another seaman told me, “That was all staged.  The battle had already been won.”
If you have a short war story to share, I would love to hear from you!

Isaiah 2:4 tells us of a day yet to come.  “…..they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks:…neither shall they learn war anymore.”

May the Lord hasten that day of peace!
Blessings,
Pastor Allan
