Reflections From the Heart of Allan Redenius
For us Baby Boomers, things that are no more:
  • A family drive in the car on a hot Sunday afternoon.  Just to cool off!  There was no air-conditioning;
  • The excitement of astronauts being launched into space with Walter Cronkite announcing every detail leading up to launch.  (Four, three, two, one, ignition, blast-off);
  • My grandma complaining every time there was a rocket launch.  “Those things always mess up the weather.”
  • Family reunions at an open air park;
  • Outdoor roller skating rinks;
  • Parades where there were actual floats and not flatbed trucks;
  • A very keen sense of what was right and what was wrong.  Respecting your elders.  Outside the boundaries, was not acceptable behavior;
  • Walking through the cemetery on Memorial Day and listening to your parents recite “Who’s who” that was buried there.  Gravestones do tell a story;
  • All the stores were closed on Sunday—restaurants, grocery stores, you couldn’t even buy gasoline;
  • A house with no indoor toilet was not that unusual;
  • For heat in the winter, an oil burner was a common sight in the middle of the living room.  Here’s a bonus of the oil burner.  Lay a Sears catalogue on top of the burner and, just before it burst into flames, take it to bed with you to keep warm;
  • Have no doubt about it, everyone went to church on Sunday.
Oh for sure, the list could go on and on.  Were the “good ol’ days” better or worse?  Indeed, modern day conveniences are really nice.  They make life so much more comfortable.  But in reality, I think the “good ol’ days” were better.  Everyone worked.  Everyone went to church on Sunday.  Society was so much more community.  Thank you, Mr. Computer, for isolating people. ☹

Society is so broken now, only Jesus can fix it!  Do you pine for days gone by?  I do…..

Just reminiscing,
Pastor Allan
